The Holzmarktquartier is a multipurpose space with over 12,000 sqm right on the banks of the river Spree in the very center of Berlin where you can enjoy art, culture and gastronomy all in one place. It was created in 2012 and is a great example of how user-driven urban development can work being managed in a cooperative form.
Cavall Mari had been there in 2017 for a family gathering in the restaurant Katerschmaus and hardly noticed the so in deep thought and designed details to give the impression and experience of an accidentally created, alternative almost chaotic place (such as the ones you could find in the city in the 90s right after the fall of the wall).
Being back at the Holzmarkt on December 30, 2023 and after taking a rebalancing yoga class for the new year in one of the buildings, made Cavall Mari more curious and intrigued by the origins of this area and its evolution since its beginnings.
So to find out more about the cooperative urban quarter, its history and where it is heading to, she sat there at the riverside with landscape architect and expert urban guide Luis Miguel Kann (walkwithluis.com).
You can listen to the audio in Spanish with fascinating insights about Holzmarkt 25, while also hearing how the trains pass and the cold wind blows in the background!
