Cooperative Urban Development-Holzmarkt 25
“Holzmarkt 25” is a multipurpose space covering more than 12,000 m² on the banks of the Spree in the heart of Berlin, where art, culture, and dining can be enjoyed all in one place. It was established in 2012 and serves as a great example of how user-driven urban development can work when carried out cooperatively. Cavall Mari visited the Holzmarkt in 2017 for a family gathering at the Katerschmaus restaurant and barely noticed the well-thought-out details that give the impression of a place that emerged spontaneously—an alternative, almost chaotic space (like those found in the city in the 1990s, shortly after the fall of the Wall).
When Cavall Mari returned to the Holzmarkt on December 30, 2023, and participated in an energy-boosting yoga class for the New Year in one of the buildings, she became even more curious and interested in the origins of this neighborhood and its development since its beginnings.
To learn more about this urban cooperative area, its history, and its development, she sat down with landscape architect and urban planner Luis Miguel Kann on one of the benches at Holzmarkt 25 shore. You can listen to the recording featuring fascinating reflections on Holzmarkt 25 while hearing the trains passing by and the cold wind in the background!
